Screen printing

Screen printing is a printing technique where ink is passed through a fine mesh screen when pressure is applied by running a squeegee across the surface.

Screen printing is our most commonly used method and is usually the most cost effective way to get your logo or artwork printed.

Your artwork is broken into separate colours and each of these colours is then assigned to a screen. Each screen is ‘exposed’ or ‘burnt’ with a one colour image, creating a stencil through which the ink can pass. Every colour that is to be printed requires its own screen.

Pricing is dependent on two main factors. First the number of colours to be printed is equivalent to the number of screens required and therefore determines the cost of the set up. Second is the quantity of the print run, the larger the run the cheaper each individual item becomes.

Screen printing is our most commonly used method and is usually the most cost effective way to get your logo or artwork printed. It produces very high quality and durable prints with great definition. We are able to print on a wide range of both natural and synthetic fabrics and are not restricted to just clothing. We can also print onto tea towels, cushions, pillowcases, non-woven and paper bags and everything in between. Please note that screen printing onto dark fabrics will require a white base print which is charged as an extra colour in print run.

There are a variety of different screen printing inks and methods available including:

  • Plastisol
  • Water based
  • Water based discharge
  • Puff
  • Glitter
  • Metallic
  • Distressed/Vintage look
  • CMYK/4 colour process
  • Foil printing

For more information about what printing process best suits your needs please feel free to contact us with any queries.

Artwork requirements for screen printing

We prefer to receive artwork in the following vector formats:

  • Adobe Illustrator (.ai)
  • Encapsulated Post Script (.eps)
  • Portable Document Format (.pdf)

Before supplying artwork please do the following:

  • Create outlines for all fonts used.
  • Assign Pantone (PMS) colour if required.
  • If applicable leave artwork in layers.
  • Supply at actual size of print. (We recommend that you design at final size rather than scaling up as the last step).

If you do not have the artwork in a vector format you can send a raster/pixel image, preferably at no less than 300dpi. Quite often a redraw is required in order to convert the raster image into a vector format before printing. We are more than happy to do this for you however please be aware that for redrawing of artwork fees of $60.00/hour apply.

Having said all that we understand that all of the above may be complete meaningless jargon! If you’re unsure about any or all of the above please feel free to contact us with any queries you have. We’re more than happy to help you figure out your options.

Digital Transfers

Digital transfers are made in a 2 step process. First the artwork is printed onto textile media and then precision contour cut. Once the transfer is made it is then applied to the garment/fabric using a heat press.

They are sometimes preferred for photographic quality images, complex logos or artwork that use fine blends or gradients.

Due to the fact that the transfers are digitally printed, as opposed to screen printed, they are sometimes preferred for photographic quality images, complex logos or artwork that use fine blends or gradients.

For very small quantities transfers can also be a more cost effective method of getting your artwork onto the desired item than screen printing. They are great for high contrast and full colour graphics and once applied are extremely durable.

Artwork requirements for digital transfers

Both raster and vector files are equally acceptable for digital transfers. With raster files please provide the highest resolution available for best results. All type must be converted to outlines if vector or to shapes in raster.

Please note that due to the fact that transfers are printed using CMYK inks it is not always possible to guarantee colour matching.

As always, don’t hesitate to contact us if you have any queries or would like any advice.

Vinyl Transfers

As the name suggests these are transfers made from a vinyl substrate which, like the digital transfers, are computer cut and then applied using a heat press. They have a wide range of applications but are especially suitable for sports names and numbers, small run promotional or custom t-shirts, uniforms and merchandise.

Especially suitable for sports names and numbers, small run promotional or custom t-shirts, uniforms and merchandise.

There is a large range of both vinyl colours and textures available. For further information please contact us and we’ll be happy to discuss your options further.

Artwork requirements for vinyl transfers

Due to the nature of the cutting process only vector based artwork can be used for vinyl transfers. As with both digital transfers and screen printing we require all type to be converted to outlines.

Embroidery

Embroidery is a stitch based as opposed to a print based method of applying logos or artwork onto clothing and is especially suited to headwear, merchandise and corporate attire. Due to the application process pricing is based on the stitch count as opposed to the number of colours.

Stitch based as opposed to a print based method of applying logos or artwork onto clothing...suited to headwear, merchandise and corporate attire.

It is both durable and high quality however is not suited to artwork that is complex or has fine details or shading, and in that scenario would need to be simplified. If changes to the artwork are not an option then screen printing or digital transfers could be a viable alternative.

Artwork requirements for embroidery

Vector format is preferred and allow for greater accuracy in the embroidery process however most raster files can be used also. Please be aware it is not possible to exactly match Pantone (PMS) colours. Instead a thread colour which is the closest match will be used instead.
